Assigning the task to a team member without the project manager's oversight or direction might lead to incomplete or inaccurate documentation. Asking the SME to document it directly might be an option, but the project manager still needs to ensure it happens and meets quality standards. Waiting until project closure is incorrect because lessons learned should be documented throughout the project lifecycle to benefit current and future projects.
