An agile database migration affects almost all business units. Despite efforts to finish before the platform's end-of-support date, a new impediment means the old platform must be used for another year at higher support cost. What should the product owner do?

The product owner should reprioritize the backlog using value and cost of delay divided by duration. This method, often called Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF), helps identify which features deliver the most value fastest, considering the financial impact of delaying them. Given the increased support costs and the need to extend the old platform's use, optimizing for economic value is crucial. Switching to a predictive approach is unlikely to resolve delays and contradicts agile principles. Reprioritizing based solely on story size and available skills ignores the critical financial implications. Removing low-value items might be part of a larger strategy, but it doesn't address the immediate need to maximize value delivery given the new cost structure.
