Using Route 53 alias records with a failover routing policy and Evaluate Target Health set to Yes is the correct approach for automatic cross-Region failover. Alias records can point directly to ALBs, and Evaluate Target Health allows Route 53 to monitor the health of the ALB and its backend instances. If the primary Region's ALB becomes unhealthy, Route 53 automatically routes traffic to the secondary Region. CNAME records cannot be used with Evaluate Target Health for ALBs. Configuring Elastic Load Balancing or EC2 instance health checks within a single ALB or Auto Scaling group doesn't provide cross-Region failover; it only manages health within that specific Region.
