Correct answer: Create a segment of customers who have soft bounced and exclude them from future sends.
Why this is the answer
This is one of the most common points of confusion for marketers. While Klaviyo tracks a "Spam Complaint Rate," that number is almost always an underestimate because of how Gmail handles data. The Missing Feedback Loop: Most inbox providers (like Yahoo, AOL, and Microsoft) use a "Feedback Loop" (FBL). When a user clicks "Mark as Spam," the provider sends a signal back to Klaviyo. Klaviyo then records the complaint and automatically suppresses that profile. Gmail does not do this. The Gmail "Black Box": Gmail treats spam complaints as private user feedback. They will move your email to the spam folder, but they will not tell Klaviyo that it happened. Consequently, a Gmail user can mark your email as spam, and they will still appear as "Active" in your Klaviyo account. Google Postmaster Tools (GPT): This is the only way to see your actual spam rate for Gmail. GPT provides an aggregate report (e.g., "Your spam rate today was 0.2%") without identifying specific individuals. The Threshold: Google strictly requires senders to stay below a 0.1% spam rate. If you reach 0.3%, Gmail may begin to block your emails entirely. Because you can't see these complaints in Klaviyo, monitoring GPT is your only "early warning system."
