Instagram lets you post photos as portrait, landscape, or square. Why is it a good idea to take your photos in the format/orientation you intend to post them in?

Taking photos in the intended format (portrait, landscape, or square) allows you to compose the shot effectively from the outset. This means you can arrange subjects, backgrounds, and other elements within the frame to create a visually appealing and balanced image without having to compromise later. Cropping after the fact often means losing important parts of the image or ending up with an awkward composition. Instagram's algorithm does not deprioritize cropped images, nor does cropping inherently lower the allowed resolution. While some editing might be easier with pre-cropped images, the primary benefit is compositional control.
