Frequent BGP session flaps indicate an underlying issue with link stability or timely detection of failures. Enabling Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) on the on-premises router is the most effective immediate adjustment. BFD provides rapid fault detection for forwarding paths, significantly reducing the time it takes for BGP to detect a link failure and reroute traffic. This prevents prolonged BGP session instability. Switching to static routing is not a dynamic solution and loses the benefits of BGP. Increasing the BGP hold timer would mask the problem by delaying detection of actual failures, potentially leading to black holes. Graceful restart helps minimize traffic disruption during planned BGP restarts but doesn't address frequent, unplanned session flaps.
