What does a service-set identifier (SSID) identify?

An SSID (Service Set Identifier) is the name of a wireless network. It allows devices, including mobile devices, to identify and connect to a specific Wi-Fi network. For example, if you see "HomeNetwork" or "GuestWi-Fi" in your device's Wi-Fi settings, those are SSIDs. The incorrect options refer to wired networks or incorrectly limit the scope of what an SSID identifies. SSIDs are exclusively for wireless networks. While applications might use a wireless network, the SSID itself identifies the network, not the application's connection requirement.
