What is the purpose of implementing VRRP?

VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) is a First Hop Redundancy Protocol (FHRP) designed to provide high availability for default gateways in a network. It allows multiple routers to share a single virtual IP address and MAC address, forming a virtual router. If the active router fails, a standby router automatically takes over the virtual IP and MAC addresses, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for end devices. This is particularly useful in multivendor environments where different router brands might be present, as VRRP is an open standard. The autodiscovery of virtual gateways is not a primary function of VRRP; it focuses on redundancy. While VRRP does use a priority system, it's not a "weighting scheme" in the sense of load balancing, but rather for electing the master router. VRRP detects router failures, not specifically link failures without BFD overhead, though a router failure would often be due to a link failure.
