Which advantage does BFD provide?

BFD (Bidirectional Forwarding Detection) is a lightweight, low-overhead protocol designed to detect failures in the forwarding path between two adjacent routers in milliseconds. This rapid detection allows routing protocols, such as OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP, to converge much faster in the event of a link or neighbor failure. BFD does not operate independently; it works in conjunction with routing protocols to provide faster failure detection than the routing protocols' native hello mechanisms. Therefore, it cannot be deployed without a routing protocol. While faster failure detection can indirectly lead to faster convergence for flapping routes, BFD's primary advantage is the speed of detection itself, not specifically faster updates for flapping routes. BFD does not maintain the routing table; that is the function of the routing protocols.
