Holding one-on-one meetings is the most effective way to understand individual stakeholder motivations. This allows for open discussion, active listening, and the ability to ask clarifying questions in a private setting, fostering trust and encouraging candid responses. Deriving motivations from the business case is insufficient as it provides a high-level view, not individual perspectives. Asking stakeholders to state motivations at a kick-off meeting is impractical; many may be hesitant to share personal motivations publicly, and it consumes valuable meeting time. Emailing objectives and requesting endorsement doesn't facilitate understanding motivations; it's a one-way communication that assumes motivations are already aligned or understood.
