RFC 1918 defines private IPv4 address ranges (10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, 192.168.0.0/16) primarily to conserve the limited supply of public IPv4 addresses. By allowing organizations to use these non-routable addresses internally, many devices can share a single public IP address through Network Address Translation (NAT). This significantly reduces the demand for unique public IPv4 addresses. While NAT is used in conjunction with RFC 1918 addresses, the RFC itself was defined to address the scarcity, not to support NAT as a protocol. It has no bearing on IPv6, and its purpose is not to prevent overlapping IP addresses, as overlaps can still occur between different private networks.
